![]() ![]() Lina soon finds out that the box has instructions to exit the City of Ember. Near the middle of the movie, Poppy finds the box in their wardrobe and opens it. On assignment day, Lina was given the job of a pipe worker and Doon is given the job of messenger, but Lina traded jobs with Doon and becomes a messenger instead. The box was tucked away and forgotten, and as the city grew old and began to crumble, the box quietly clicked open. But fate ran another course, and the chain was broken. None knew what secrets it held, only that it would open when it was needed most. As the years counted down, the box passed from mayor to mayor. The box was entrusted to the first mayor, who was to pass it on to her successor. The box was set for 200 years and once the countdown ends, the box would click open. The city would be powered by a generator and made of thousands of lights. In a secret location, architects, scientists, and engineers met and concluded that there was only one hope for our future: to build an underground city designed to keep its citizens protected for generations to come. On the day the world ended, the fate of mankind was carried in a small metal box. Her mother died giving birth to Poppy and their father died trying to leave Ember. They live with the care of their grandmother (known as ‘Granny’ in the movie). Lina is an orphan, along with her younger sister, Poppy Mayfleet. With Doon's help, Lina finds a way to escape Ember, and they find a tunnel that stops directly above the city, where Lina adds to the note Doon had meant to send to Clary Laine, then they stuff it and a rock into Doon's shirt and drop it out of the tunnel, letting Mrs. They are brought into the care of Evaleen Murdo, a neighbor and friend of the family. In Chapter 10 of Book 1, Granny dies, either due to the dreaded "coughing sickness" or finally succumbing to her mental illness, leaving Lina and Poppy completely alone. Lina's mother died giving birth to Lina's younger sister Poppy Mayfleet, and her father later died as well due to an unknown illness. The mayor shoves a man and a physical fight ensues.Lina is an orphan, raised under the care of her grandmother, known as " Granny," by her.The police force themselves into Lina’s and Doon’s homes, accuse friends of helping them, and smash and overturn objects. Lina and Doon are chased by the mayor’s police force in an aggressive manner.When Lina becomes aware that the mayor is stealing food from the city’s residents, the mayor’s assistant grabs her, throws her against a wall and takes her to the mayor.A giant mole chases Lina and Doon and attempts to eat them.The mayor is eaten by a giant mole (we see the mole coming for the mayor and hear the mayor screaming as he is eaten).A man who is arrested as he attempts to leave the city is taken away screaming by masked men.Doon is chased by a menacing man and thrown down a flight of stairs.There is some violence in this movie including the following: ![]() Together with Doon, she battles a corrupt mayor, a weary society and a giant mole to piece together the clues within the box and discover a way out of the city. Lina finds the special box in the back of a dusty cupboard. They have just started their first jobs as service people to the city and become concerned about the city’s future when they notice that food supplies are running low and the city’s only generator is beginning to fail. The main characters of the film, Lina Mayfleet (Saoirse Ronan) and Doon Harrow (Harry Treadaway), are teenagers living in the city 200 years after its conception. When the holder of the box dies suddenly, it is misplaced and the plans for the way out of the city are lost. The box is programmed only to release the escape plan in 200 years. At the time, a special box was also created and encrypted with secret plans for escaping the city.
